 "O.K. in a pinch" 2010-02-03

This is nice in that it is small and has many features. However, the AM reception indoors is nonexistent, and the indoor FM reception is just adequate, even with the antenna fully extended. I live in a large metropolitan area and there are many powerful AM stations, and I can tune none inside. Three or four of the most powerful FM stations come in adequately. I would not recommend it for indoor use during a storm or power outage. I think I'll keep mine in the car and order the CC emergency radio for use indoors.

"Awesome, Powerful, Quality Emergency Radio" 2010-01-29
By Darth Monkey (Ocoee, Fl United States)
Just received this today from Amazon. This is a sweet little radio and the quality is great. I like the rubbery texture too it so it feels good when holding it and it won't slip out of your hands. I had great reception on the radio even after only cranking it for a minute or so. All stations in my area I got perfectly fine in AM and FM, Orlando, FL. The light worked great too, just enough to do whatever you need to do. Also the main reason I got this was to be able to charge my iPhone in an emergency, I plugged the iPhone cable into the USB slot, started cranking and viola the iPhone charged just fine. You have to continuously crank to charge it, which is fine, it's for an emergency and you should only need a minute or two for making a call. But it worked and that's all I wanted. I'll be carrying it around to try out different areas of the city too. Haven't tried the solar charger yet, but I will soon. BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

I bought this in case of a disaster. Not likely to happen where I live, but nice to have a crank radio and flashlight.

Only thing is I thought it would be bigger. But it works like advertised.

 "Disappointing solar panel" 2010-01-27
By Bob (Silicon Valley)
I have other Eton crank radios. I bought this one for the solar charge so it would always be ready, unlike the crank models. It turns out that in normal daylight coming in a window the radio won't play as the voltage is too low. I got the unit to work with a 250 watt light bulb directly over the solar cell. It's winter; perhaps at noon in July with no clouds this radio will play. The case is rugged and the radio is attractive. The receiver on these Etons is very cheap. The rechargeable batteries are small. The wiring inside is cheaply done. The crank part works ok, but the solar feature is bad. I do like some of the new fancy digital alert selection choices and other features in the digital menu. On the other hand the firmware needs updating: in solar cell mode inadequate light leaves a message of "battery low", which isn't what is meant at all. Instead the voltage from the solar cell is what is actually low and it will operate the menu screen but won't charge the battery or play the radio. It seems to take a LOT of light to start doing anything. This thing needs a high efficiency solar cell. It also needs one of those charge booster circuits that are used in cellphones and newer flashlights so that whatever power is available from the solar cell is boosted up to the needed voltage for the radio. Ideally the solar mode would work like the crank mode- the radio would work off the battery while the solar cell added whatever power it had. That way if the solar power was inadequate the batteries would discharge more slowly. The way it is now the radio cannot use any battery power in solar mode.

The solar cell version isn't worth it. The crank ones are ok, though I wish the radios and electronic construction were of higher quality. The solar mode is next to useless outside of bright noon sun. Good idea but awful execution.

 "Junk" 2009-11-30
By D. Pierce (USA)
The first day out of the box I tried to solar charge the solared powered Eaton Red Cross Radio. It would not charge. I tried a second day again in direct sunlight and it would not charge.

I contacted warranty department and to this day have been rudely ignored. I feel like they stole my money and shall never purchase from them or amazon again. I was forced to rate this item and while it does not deserve a rating other than a big zero, I was forced to give it a one!

Respectfully, Reverend Pierce

"Complicated product but no manual, no apparent purpose" 2009-10-27
By Kuru (Seattle)
This is a feature-laden device, with enough knobs, buttons and dials to entertain a toddler for hours, but Eton has not bothered to include a usable manual with it. (The manual provided is so poorly written that it is useless.)

What is this product actually intended for? If for emergencies, it is too complicated to figure out in the dark, while in pain, in a panic and in a hurry. If for general use, why not get an ordinary radio and save the extra money?

As other comments note, this device is a real power hog. Don't expect much life from the 3 AA batteries. Hand-cranking gets you a few minutes of power. Here in the cloudy Northwest, I have yet to have any power from the solar cell. Note that you have to shell out extra money for an adapter to plug this into a wall.

This strikes me as a perfect example of a product that has had features piled onto it so it will seem appealing on the shelf, but is not expected to actually be used much after purchase. I bet a lot of these end up sitting in purchasers' closets gathering dust.

 "GREAT RADIO! NEED ACCESSORIES?" 2009-10-12
By Carol Lincoln (ALASKA)
I love this radio! I recently upgraded from an FR300 and I love the improvements. I use it everyday and when I go anywhere.

Amazon does not have the AC adapter that is designed for this radio so I ordered the proper one from Eton that works on the FR500 and FR600 (I called them to verify) [...]

Eton also has the following antenna:

Eton AN200 Grundig Antenna Loop helps clarify AM radio reception.

First, plug it in to the "Antenna Input" jack. Then tune to the AM radio frequency of your choice. Fine-tune the radio frequency by adjusting the control knob on the AN200.

No Antenna Input jack? No problem! Simply set the antenna loop close to your radio for better reception.

AN200 is an all direction receiver. You can get better reception by placing it at different directions.

Features:

Antenna loop

Better AM reception and sound

Works with and without Antenna Input jack

All direction receiver - place in different directions to get a better signal

have not been able to get battery status to display other than "battery low". this is after I purchased a transformer to charge the battery. I'll probably take it to Radio Shack to find out if a defective rechargeable is the culprit. so far not satisfied.

 "Disappointing toy" 2009-12-22
By myPenName
This is just a toy and not even fun. It has very poor AM sensitivity and poor FM sensitivity. It is very difficult to tune because of the small tuning wheel and too fast "tune speed". The cellphone charging port is USB and useless for my Verizon LG phones.

The sound is acceptable. I can't comment on crank charge life or solar charging. The hand crank is a good idea (essential for this design) but as I stated above, the overall package is very disappointing.

The good points are size, flashlight and nice red color. But it is worthless for even motel camping and anyone seriously planning for emergencies should think again. $30 for batteries for your existing radios would be much better.

If my wife hadn't thrown away all the original packing materials and shipping container I would have returned this item to Amazon for a refund, but the effort to pack and ship is more than I want to fool with.

Good idea. Poor design.
